Admirable Speaker

When I think of ‘speakers’ the people I think of most are my teachers. Although they may not be famous people addressing thousands or millions of viewers in an audience or on television, they still practice public speaking every day during their lectures. The teacher I most admire for his speaking abilities is Dr. Carlos Garcia. I currently have him for a sociology class and I also took one of his classes last semester, some of you may know him. For me, his speaking is most powerful and persuasive through ethos. I enjoy his lecture style because of his personality; he is funny, enthusiastic and passionate about what he is teaching, which makes the lecture more interesting for me. His personal character is unique because he comes across as very relaxed and easy going (he wears Vans, jeans and t-shirts to class every day) but then when it comes down to it, he is really not one of the easiest teachers because of his challenging tests and assignments. The fact that he takes his students’ work seriously by expecting a lot from them makes me respect him as a teacher.

I would like to say that it is my personal character that allows me to be persuasive as well but I cannot be sure because I’m never trying to persuade myself! My friends and family could probably do a better job answering that question. I am a reasonable, honest and kind person so I would think those qualities would allow me to be persuasive towards those who know me.

  1. I had Professor Garcia last semester for a Sociology class as well. I agree with what you mentioned of his teaching style. I enjoyed his laid-back, yet serious and fully engaged, style. He does have a unique personal character for a Professor.

Additionally, I agree that Professor Garcia is most persuasive through ethos, but I also think he uses logos and pathos. When I took his class, he showed great flow of logic in his lectures and typically provided resources for his material. For me, at least, he was able to tug at my emotions on certain concerning topics as well.

This semester, I am taking my second Psychology class with Professor Callaghan. He also has a very similar style as Professor Garcia and is equally passionate about the information he conveys. I think I prefer this type of teaching style the best.

  2. Hello Rena I enjoyed reading your post.
It is amazing how much a teacher can influence whether or not you enjoy a subject. I have had good and bad teachers, and for me it is not the workload that makes them good or bad. It is there ability to make the class interesting, you can really tell when I teacher loves their job. I took a great teacher last two semesters. Although I am a comm major the teacher was a geology professor he also came to class in very relaxed attire, usually shorts and a hawaiian type shirt.. He had such a passion for teaching and was extremely knowledgeable, you could really tell that he cared not only about the students doing well on tests and assignments, but that they walked away from the class remembering what they had had learned.
